There are many whose favourite annual event is Halloween. Ghoulish fun has a big appeal and whether you love going out partying or staying in and making a big deal of it for the trick or treaters, there seems to be a never-ending array of spooky treats to tantalise your taste buds. Whether you prefer to buy them or make your own, here is our selection of the best spooky treats to enjoy come October 31st.
All you need to buy are the ingredients to make your own delicious spooky treats. Flour, eggs, sugar, cutters, food colouring for the icing ... you get the idea.
One of the simplest and easiest spooky treats. A standard biscuit recipe of:
250g butter, softened
140g caster sugar
1 egg yolk
2 tsp vanilla extract
300g plain flour
Mix into a dough, roll out and use a pumpkin-shaped cutter to make the cookies. When cooled, decorate them with orange-coloured icing. Quick, easy and delicious.
Fill several small glasses with chocolate mousse. Leave a gap at the top and once set, grate chocolate over the mousse to look like earth. Make some basic rectangle shaped biscuits, curve the ends to look like tombstones and when cool, cut in half. Using icing, write the letters RIP onto each biscuit at the curved ends and pop into the chocolate. Instant graveyard pots that taste great.
Using the basic ingredients above make larger than usual, round cookies. Then add a spider's web using black-coloured or chocolate icing and, if you're feeling adventurous, you can even add a spider. When set these look amazing either for a Halloween party or to give out as treats.
Knock up a batch of round chocolate cookies using the basic recipe but replacing 100g of the plain flour with cocoa powder. Once cooled make up some black icing and give each biscuit a thin coating. Once set make up some thicker icing and using a piping bag put a peak into the centre of each cookie. When they are ready to eat you could even add some ribbons around the peak in the middle to add a dash of ghoulish colour.
These work best if you shape them by hand rather than use a cutter. You are aiming for an elongated shape with a round head and body that widens slightly as it comes down to the bottom with should be different sized points. Once cooked white chocolate or white icing should be used to cover the entire biscuit making sure its very smooth. Add faces or eyes or anything you fancy once the white covering has set.
Poisonous Toffee Apples
Start with small -medium sized green apples, Granny Smiths are ideal, and push a strong wooden skewer into each of them. In a medium pot, combine 2 cups of sugar, ¾ cup water, ½ cup of glucose/corn syrup and few drops of black food colouring and stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture feels smooth when you rub it between your fingers. Bring this to boil until it starts to reach the cracking stage then carefully dip each apple into the hot mixture until they are completely covered except for a bit around the skewer. Leave to cool for around an hour on greaseproof paper or baking parchment before serving.
